- Studio Dragon is developing about 150 projects and releases 20 to 30 dramas a year, according to Seoul Economic Daily.
- A cross-functional Green Light Committee screens scripts, genres, characters and international potential before production.
- Upcoming titles include Gift, starring Kim Woo-bin, and Tale of the Whale.
Studio Dragon is sharpening its global ambitions as it seeks to move beyond the label of a Korean drama producer. In an interview published on October 26, Seoul Economic Daily quoted Lee Hye-young, head of Studio Dragon's first drama production division, on the studio's international expansion and project selection process.
A large pipeline supports expansion
Lee said about 150 projects are currently in development. Studio Dragon aims to deliver 20 to 30 dramas a year while building stories that can travel across markets rather than relying on a separate formula for overseas audiences.
The company uses a Green Light Committee to review potential productions. Producers, management and chief producers assess scripts, characters, genre appeal, production prospects and the possibility of extending a project into global markets. The process is designed to reduce investment mistakes while identifying intellectual property with longer commercial potential.
IP development remains central
Studio Dragon is also expanding its involvement before filming begins. The company plans scripts well into a series before production and is using previsualization tools to align writers, directors, crews and actors on key scenes. Lee said the group wants to extend IP beyond individual productions and build businesses around stories it owns.
The near-term slate includes Gift, starring Kim Woo-bin and scheduled for December, and Tale of the Whale, featuring Choi Woo-shik, Moon Ga-young, Heo Nam-jun and Yoo Jae-myung. The releases give investors concrete milestones for assessing whether the company's global strategy can translate development scale into recurring content and IP revenue.
Studio Dragon's business and competitive setting
Studio Dragon is a South Korean premium storyteller group that develops and produces original television dramas and related intellectual property, with stories distributed to audiences at home and abroad, according to its corporate website. Its portfolio includes titles such as Queen of Tears, Vincenzo and The Glory. The company is positioning its large development pool and production specialization against the broader international drama-studio market.
