- Shinko Electric plans to turn Japan Display's former Mobara facility into an advanced semiconductor packaging site.
- Handover is scheduled for March 31, 2027, with commercial operations targeted for fiscal 2028.
- FICT will take the western part of the site, creating a shared manufacturing base for packaging-related components.
Shinko Electric Industries plans to convert Japan Display's former Mobara plant in Chiba into an advanced semiconductor packaging hub. East Asia Brief reported that the companies detailed the handover terms on October 11, 2026.
The site covers 373,482.91 square meters. Shinko is scheduled to take possession on March 31, 2027 and is targeting commercial operations during fiscal 2028. The transaction price and Shinko's retooling budget have not been disclosed.
AI packaging drives expansion
Shinko will retain the eastern section, about 140,738 square meters, for advanced flip-chip package production. The company is responding to demand for larger and more complex packages used with artificial intelligence accelerators, where substrate capacity has become a strategic constraint.
The western section, about 232,745 square meters, is intended for FICT, a manufacturing partner that produces high-density multilayer printed wiring boards. The shared site is designed to connect substrate production with related backend semiconductor work.
Japan Display expects the sale to generate an extraordinary gain of 51.4 billion yen against a book value of 26.6 billion yen, according to East Asia Brief. For Shinko, the project offers access to an existing industrial site and cleanroom infrastructure rather than a completely new facility, but execution will depend on handover procedures, equipment conversion and customer demand through fiscal 2028.
What Shinko Electric makes
Shinko Electric manufactures integrated-circuit substrates, leadframes and flip-chip ball grid array packages for semiconductor applications. The Nagano-based company operates in the advanced-packaging ecosystem alongside companies such as Ibiden, Resonac Holdings and Dai Nippon Printing, while its focus is specialized packaging substrates and related components rather than display panels.
Japan's Nikkei 225 provides the broader market backdrop for Japanese technology and manufacturing shares.
