Shinhan Financial Group is on course to reach its 10 percent return-on-equity target ahead of schedule after reporting stronger earnings for the first nine months of 2026. The Investor reported on October 27 that net profit rose 12.7 percent year on year to 5.0274 trillion won.
Higher Earnings, Softer Quarter
Return on equity reached 11.9 percent at the end of September, exceeding Shinhan's 10 percent target for 2027. Net interest income increased 7.9 percent to 9.3493 trillion won in the January-to-September period, while non-interest income rose 8.2 percent to 3.4283 trillion won.
The quarterly picture was weaker. Third-quarter net profit fell 12.9 percent from the previous quarter to 1.5846 trillion won, while non-interest income dropped 45.5 percent as lower stock-trading activity reduced brokerage fees and securities-related gains.
Capital Returns In Focus
Shinhan's board approved a third-quarter dividend of 740 won per share and a 450 billion won share buyback. The group expects total shareholder returns of about 3 trillion won in 2026, including cash dividends and share buybacks or cancellations.
The common equity Tier 1 ratio stood at 13.62 percent at the end of September, up 0.12 percentage point from the previous quarter. Management also plans to strengthen nonbanking earnings through its acquisition of an insurer and the normalization of its insurance business.
Shinhan Financial Group's Business
Shinhan Financial Group is a South Korean financial holding company with banking and nonbanking businesses serving the domestic market and international customers. Its businesses include interest-generating banking activities, securities services, cards, insurance and asset management. Among South Korea's five major financial groups, it ranked behind KB Financial on nine-month 2026 net profit and ahead of Hana Financial and Woori Financial, according to SBS News. That position gives investors exposure to a large banking-led group, while the weaker quarterly fee contribution remains a key earnings factor.
