SeAH Besteel Holdings swung to a consolidated net loss in the third quarter despite higher sales, as low-cost imports and rising costs squeezed margins. The company reported the results on Thursday, October 29, according to The Herald Business.

Consolidated sales reached KRW 1.06 trillion, up 14.1% from a year earlier. Operating profit fell 46.4% to KRW 14.4 billion, while the group recorded a net loss of KRW 12.4 billion.

Imports pressure steel margins

Higher sales volumes at SeAH Besteel and SeAH Changwon Integrated Special Steel, along with price increases reflecting higher raw-material costs, supported revenue. The company said it could not fully pass those costs on to customers because of intensified competition from low-priced imports.

Higher logistics costs linked to instability in the Middle East and exchange-rate volatility added to the pressure. SeAH Besteel's sales rose 16.0% year over year, supported by demand from eco-friendly mobility, defense and heavy equipment, but its operating profit declined 34.4% as Chinese imports and higher steel-scrap costs weighed on margins.

Product mix becomes the focus

Management said it plans to increase sales of high-value products for eco-friendly vehicles, semiconductors, defense, energy and power generation. It also plans process-efficiency improvements and cost reductions, while pursuing trade-remedy proceedings related to Chinese steel-bar imports.

Business and competitive setting

SeAH Besteel Holdings operates in specialty steel and related high-performance metal materials, serving mobility, defense, heavy equipment, semiconductor, energy and power-generation markets. Its reported business includes SeAH Besteel and SeAH Changwon Integrated Special Steel, with demand increasingly focused on higher-value applications. The latest results show the company facing intense competition from low-priced imported steel while seeking differentiation through product mix, quality and delivery capabilities.
