- Opera began an opt-in early preview of WebAI and local AI models in Opera One.
- The company said Opera GX and Opera Neon are planned to follow.
- Local processing is designed to reduce reliance on external AI services and keep handled information on the user's device.
Opera began rolling out local AI models and WebAI in its browsers on October 27, according to a Opera Newsroom release. The opt-in early preview is initially available in Opera One, adding a new local-computing angle to the browser maker's artificial-intelligence strategy.
Local AI moves into everyday browsing
Opera said WebAI allows websites and browser extensions to use AI hosted through the browser. The implementation is model-agnostic and is built around open models, with access at launch to Google's Gemma and, on Macs with Apple silicon, Apple's on-device foundation model.
The company presented local processing as a way for users to run selected AI functions without sending the relevant information to an external AI service. Developers can also build features without operating their own AI infrastructure or paying for every request. WebAI is opt-in, and users must enable downloads and site-specific permissions.
Preview availability and product roadmap
The early preview supports 64-bit Windows PCs using Intel or AMD processors and Macs with Apple silicon. Performance depends on the hardware in the user's device. Opera said Opera GX and Opera Neon are due to follow, while additional open models and development tools are planned.
The release also introduced HTML-in-Canvas, which lets developers place interactive web pages inside two- and three-dimensional scenes. The feature is particularly relevant to Opera GX, where the company demonstrated live pages embedded in game-like environments.
For investors, the announcement expands Opera's product narrative beyond browser features toward on-device computing and developer adoption. Whether that translates into financial growth will depend on usage, retention and the company's ability to turn new capabilities into sustainable engagement or monetization.
