- MediciNova said the MN-001 study missed statistical significance on its primary endpoints.
- The company reported statistically significant HDL-related improvements and an early triglyceride reduction.
- Topline results from the COMBAT-ALS trial remain expected by year-end.
MediciNova said on October 12, 2026, that its Phase 2 study of MN-001 produced encouraging signals in metabolic disease but did not achieve statistical significance on its primary endpoints. The update was issued by CEO Yuichi Iwaki and published by GlobeNewswire.
MN-001 Shows Selective Lipid Signals
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled MN-001-NATG-202 trial enrolled 40 patients and ran for 24 weeks. MediciNova reported statistically significant improvements in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and HDL particle concentration compared with placebo, together with an early statistically significant reduction in serum triglycerides.
At the end of the treatment period, serum triglycerides, liver fat and body weight were lower in the MN-001 group than in the placebo group, but those differences were not statistically significant. The company said it is conducting further analyses, including the possible influence of concomitant medications and baseline lipid severity.
Safety and ALS Milestone
MediciNova said MN-001 was well tolerated in the study, with no drug-related serious adverse events reported. The company plans to use the completed analysis to assess potential next steps for the metabolic-disease indication.
Separately, MediciNova said the double-blind portion of its 234-patient COMBAT-ALS Phase 2b/3 trial of MN-166 was complete. The study uses the Combined Assessment of Function and Survival as its primary endpoint, and topline results remain expected by year-end.
For investors, the update leaves MN-001 with a mixed evidence profile: selected lipid measures improved, while the trial's primary endpoints were not statistically significant. That distinction is important when assessing the program's development outlook.
