Maruti Suzuki stock: Record sales meet margin pressure

Maruti Suzuki stock remains tied to record vehicle demand and weaker quarterly earnings. Capacity is expanding as orders continue to exceed supply.

Growth Meets Margin Pressure

  • Maruti Suzuki posted its strongest quarterly sales volume in the July-September period.
  • Higher vehicle demand did not prevent a decline in operating profit and net income.
  • Management said capacity additions are serving demand, but orders still exceeded supply at quarter-end.

Maruti Suzuki reported record sales and net sales for the July-September quarter on October 27, while profit came under pressure from higher commodity costs and lower non-operating income. The results point to strong demand for the Indian automaker's vehicles, but also to a difficult margin environment.

Record Volume, Weaker Earnings

According to Maruti Suzuki's press release, total quarterly sales reached 696,654 vehicles, up 26.5 percent from the same period a year earlier. Net sales rose to INR 506,155 million from INR 401,358 million.

Operating profit fell to INR 28,037 million from INR 33,820 million. Net profit declined to INR 24,149 million from INR 33,028 million, with the company citing West Asia conflict-linked commodity increases and mark-to-market losses on invested surplus.

Demand Still Outruns Capacity

Small-car sales increased 35.9 percent and sport utility vehicle sales rose 68.2 percent during the quarter. Maruti Suzuki said its domestic market share increased by 2.2 percentage points to 40.8 percent, while pending bookings stood at about 200,000 vehicles at the end of the quarter.

Capacity additions have helped the company respond to demand, but network inventory remained low at about 17 days. Export sales reached 108,119 vehicles, below the 110,487 vehicles recorded in the year-earlier quarter.

Business Profile And Position

Maruti Suzuki India sells passenger vehicles through its Arena and NEXA channels and also operates commercial-vehicle, used-car, insurance, parts and service businesses in India. Its portfolio includes small cars, sport utility vehicles, vans and electric vehicles.

The company occupies a broad domestic position, supported by its large retail network and a 40.8 percent domestic passenger-vehicle market share in the reported quarter. Its scale gives it wider segment coverage than a specialist automaker, while profitability remains exposed to commodity costs, product mix and capacity investment.

Indian equities are tracked through the BSE Sensex.
