Macronix stock weighs capacity expansion as shortage lasts to 2030

- Macronix is prioritizing fuller use of existing factories instead of building a new plant.
- The company is directing investment toward NOR and NAND memory for data centers and other specialist markets.
- A SpaceX supply agreement could add more than one million units to annual shipments.
Macronix is weighing additional production capacity as strong demand for artificial-intelligence servers tightens the market for memory chips. The Hsinchu-based company said on Wednesday, November 4, that it would first seek higher utilization of its existing factories rather than build a new plant, according to Taipei Times.
Capacity remains the key constraint
Macronix expects the memory shortage to persist through 2030. Management said price increases, rather than rapid capacity additions, should support near-term revenue growth while equipment lead times delay new output.
The company plans to add 5,000 12-inch wafers per month through an investment of 15.8 billion New Taiwan dollars. The additional wafer capacity is not expected to arrive until 2028, leaving utilization and product mix as the nearer-term levers for growth.
Demand broadens beyond data centers
Macronix said it has several new products planned for next year and has secured an agreement to supply NOR and eMMC NAND memory to SpaceX for low-Earth-orbit satellite constellations. The partnership is expected to lift annual shipment volume by more than one million units.
The shift reflects stronger demand for NOR memory used in data centers and continued interest in NAND products. It also reduces the emphasis on less advanced memory lines as artificial-intelligence infrastructure absorbs more industry capacity.
Macronix serves specialist memory markets
Macronix International manufactures NOR and NAND flash memory and operates from Hsinchu, Taiwan. Its products serve data centers, satellite systems and other applications that require non-volatile memory. The company is a major supplier in these markets, while Taiwan-based Winbond Electronics is described by Taipei Times as the world's largest NOR flash maker; Infineon Technologies is also active in the broader NOR and F-RAM market.
