- The relaunch combines retro branding with a new rum-based recipe and collectible packaging.
Lotte Chilsung Beverage said on Friday, October 30, that limited-edition sets for its revived Captain Q liquor sold out rapidly, drawing renewed attention to the brand's return after an 11-year absence. The Seoul Economic Daily reported that the first limited-edition package sold out within a day on a factory-shipment basis.
Demand extends beyond nostalgia
The company is releasing a follow-up edition called Broken Captain Q Time Machine in 30,000 sets, more than twice the size of the initial run. The sets will first reach independent supermarkets before expanding to Lotte Mart, Lotte Super and Nonghyup outlets.
Captain Q returned to the market on October 14. The 360-milliliter bottle sells for KRW 9,900, while the earlier Treasure Chest package sold for KRW 19,800 and included two bottles, a stainless-steel glass and a commemorative coin.
Retail demand was broad. The report said pre-orders for 1,300 sets at 7-Eleven sold out, 1,200 sets available through CU were taken on the announcement day, and GS25 sold 98 percent of the stock it received between October 14 and 19. Lotte Mart sold 99 percent of its launch-day allocation.
Brand revival adds product momentum
The relaunch uses the original green-bottle image but changes the recipe. The new version uses Caribbean rum aged in bourbon and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks and has an alcohol content of 35 percent by volume.
Online mentions reached about 10,000 in the two weeks after the relaunch, while three advertising videos featuring comedian Lee Sun-min generated 13 million views within 20 days, according to the report. Lotte Chilsung said the response came from both former consumers and younger drinkers, although expanding production may be constrained by rum supply.
