Hanmi Pharmaceutical and GC Biopharma signed an exclusive licensing agreement with BioMarin on October 30, 2026, for their jointly developed Fabry disease candidate LA-GLA. The agreement is worth up to 475 million US dollars plus royalties, according to Korea Biomedical Review.

The deal provides a combined upfront payment of 70 million US dollars to the two Korean companies. They are also eligible for up to 405 million US dollars in development and commercial milestones, alongside tiered royalties on future sales.

BioMarin takes global development lead

LA-GLA, also known as HM15421/GC1134A, is an investigational long-acting enzyme replacement therapy for Fabry disease, a lysosomal storage disorder. The treatment is designed to offer subcutaneous administration instead of the intravenous infusions commonly used every two weeks.

The candidate is currently being evaluated in a global Phase 1/2 clinical trial and received US Food and Drug Administration orphan drug designation in 2024. BioMarin will lead subsequent global development, manufacturing and commercialization outside South Korea. Hanmi and GC Biopharma retain responsibility for approval and commercialization in their home market.

Hanmi targets multiple growth areas

Hanmi Pharmaceutical develops medicines across obesity and metabolism, oncology and rare diseases. Its portfolio also includes biopharmaceutical and active pharmaceutical ingredient contract development and manufacturing services, with operations centered in South Korea.

In rare diseases, Hanmi competes with specialized developers such as BioMarin, Sanofi and Takeda, which have established positions in genetic and enzyme replacement therapies. Hanmi is more narrowly positioned around Korean drug development, licensing partnerships and a pipeline spanning metabolic, oncology and rare disease programs.
