Grupo Gigante is examining a possible acquisition of Mexican restaurant chain La Casa de Toño, adding a potential expansion project to a portfolio spanning specialized retail, restaurants and real estate. The development was reported by El CEO on October 25, 2026.
Grupo Gigante said on July 22 that its restaurant division was taking part in an initial and preliminary evaluation of a possible purchase. The transaction had not been finalized in the report, while estimates cited by El CEO put its potential size above 400 million US dollars. The article said the group was considering a combination of internal funds and bank financing, without a final structure being disclosed.
Restaurant growth adds strategic optionality
The restaurant division already includes Toks, Panda Express, Beer Factory, Shake Shack and El Farolito. El CEO reported that Toks had 196 restaurants at the end of 2025, while the group also operated 21 Shake Shack locations and 13 El Farolito restaurants.
For investors, the possible transaction would extend Grupo Gigante's move away from its former supermarket identity. The group sold its self-service stores to Soriana in 2007 and has since built a more diversified platform around specialized retail, food service and property assets.
Business model and competitive position
Grupo Gigante is a Mexico-based conglomerate with operations in specialized retail, restaurants and real estate. Its brands include Office Depot, Petco, Casaideas, Toks and other food-service concepts, while Gigante Grupo Inmobiliario develops, manages and commercializes commercial, residential, corporate and mixed-use projects. The company is more diversified than single-format operators such as Soriana, while its restaurant and retail brands compete within distinct national and international categories. The group also works with hotel companies including Grupo Presidente, Marriott and Hyatt on tourism developments.
