Gentera balances growth and credit quality

  • Third-quarter net income rose year over year, while past-due loans increased to 4.57% of the loan book.
  • Management is prioritizing credit quality over faster expansion in Mexico, with the next dividend payment scheduled for November 13.

Gentera reported stronger third-quarter earnings on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, but rising credit stress is pushing management toward a more cautious lending strategy. The Rio Times reported that net income reached MXN 2.342 billion for the quarter ended September 30, up 8.6% from a year earlier.

The loan book grew 8.5% year over year to MXN 95.22 billion, while the group served a record 6.87 million people in Mexico and Peru. However, past-due loans rose to 4.57% of the portfolio from 3.43% a year earlier and 4.04% in the second quarter. Provisions for expected loan losses increased 31.7% to MXN 3.753 billion.

Mexico slows as other units grow

Gentera chief executive Enrique Majós said the group is putting prudence ahead of growth, particularly in Mexico. Banco Compartamos Mexico's loan book fell 1.0% from the second quarter, although it was still 6.5% above the year-earlier level.

The group's other operations continued to expand more quickly. Compartamos Banco Peru increased its loan book 11.6% year over year to MXN 26.431 billion, while ConCrédito grew 14.4% to MXN 6.878 billion. Gentera has not set a date for returning to double-digit loan growth in Mexico, making portfolio quality a key issue for the next reporting cycle.

Dividend date gives investors a marker

The second and final dividend payment, worth about MXN 1.64 billion in total, is due on Friday, November 13. Nine-month net income reached MXN 7.189 billion, up 10.9% year over year, providing support for the distribution while provisions and past-due loans remain in focus.
