- Higher fuel-recovery charges and the VTFE acquisition supported revenue growth.
- Existing-customer volumes remained subdued, while information management outperformed the express package division.
Freightways reported stronger first-quarter earnings on October 29, 2026, even as high fuel prices pressured consumer spending. According to RNZ, revenue in the three months to September increased 17.6 percent to NZD 408.3 million, while net profit rose 12 percent to NZD 26.2 million. Operating earnings, measured as EBITA, increased 12.9 percent to NZD 50 million.
Fuel recovery supports revenue
Freightways said higher fuel-recovery charges and the addition of Australian temperature-controlled transport business VTFE helped lift revenue. The company also continued to gain market share, although the underlying demand picture remained mixed.
New Zealand express package volumes increased 2.9 percent, with most of the improvement attributed to market-share gains. Volumes from existing customers rose only 0.3 percent. E-commerce volumes were stronger, while retail and health-related volumes declined.
Premium demand remains softer
Consumers and businesses showed less appetite for more expensive services, including overnight airfreight and temperature-controlled deliveries. Chief executive Mark Troughear said at the annual meeting that customers were accepting slower road delivery when airfreight would cost substantially more.
The express package division generated revenue of NZD 346 million, up 20.1 percent, but its EBITA increased less strongly and its margin declined to 12.2 percent from 13.3 percent. Information Management was more resilient: earnings rose 17.5 percent to NZD 9.4 million, while its margin improved to 14.7 percent from 13.2 percent.
Outlook depends on fuel and demand
Freightways expects volumes from existing customers in New Zealand and Australia to remain subdued in the near term. Management said conditions could gradually improve if fuel prices fall and remain lower, with a potentially stronger recovery in New Zealand than in Australia.
