Fortum stock misses Q3 profit view as nuclear forecast narrows

Fortum stock posted higher comparable operating profit, but its nuclear outlook moved to the low end of the prior range. Demand remains robust.

Fortum balances profit and outlook

  • Comparable operating profit improved year over year, but narrowly missed the company-provided consensus.
  • Management continues to see strong long-term electricity demand, particularly from data centres.
  • Near-term industrial electrification projects are advancing at different speeds.

Fortum reported its third-quarter results on October 28, 2026, with comparable operating profit rising to EUR 102 million from EUR 97 million a year earlier. The figure nevertheless came in slightly below the EUR 105 million median forecast in the company-provided consensus poll, according to Reuters.

Nuclear outlook moves to lower end

Fortum said it expects nuclear generation of about 23.0 terawatt-hours in 2026, which is the bottom end of its previous 23.0 to 23.5 terawatt-hour range. The change reduces the upper end of the company’s earlier outlook and is relevant for investors because nuclear generation is a central earnings driver for the Finnish utility.

Chief Executive Markus Rauramo said long-term electricity demand remains robust, particularly because of data-centre activity in Finland. Fortum also cautioned that demand realization in the near term remains gradual, while industrial electrification projects are progressing at different speeds depending on the sector.

What the figures mean for investors

The quarterly update presents a mixed picture. Comparable profitability improved year over year, but the modest consensus shortfall and the narrower nuclear production outlook point to limited near-term visibility. At the same time, structural electricity demand and data-centre development offer longer-term support, provided projects move from planning to actual consumption.

Investors should distinguish between comparable and reported performance when assessing the release. The reported operating result was EUR 72 million, while the comparable figure excludes items used in Fortum’s adjusted performance presentation. The two measures therefore describe different aspects of the quarter and should not be treated as interchangeable.

For the latest real-time quote of Fortum stock, Lang & Schwarz showed EUR 23.05 on October 29, 2026, at 22:59 Berlin time.
