- Famous Brands reported revenue growth for the six months ended 31 August 2026, while operating profit and headline earnings per share declined.
- The group reduced capital expenditure and borrowings as it focused on cash conservation and debt reduction.
- Performance remained uneven across South African brands, Botswana and the international operations.
Famous Brands stock is in focus after the South African restaurant group reported a stronger cash position alongside weaker profitability for the six months ended 31 August 2026. In a report published on 21 October, Moneyweb said Famous Brands increased its interim dividend even as operating profit and headline earnings per share came under pressure.
Revenue growth did not protect margins
Group revenue rose 2.3% to 4.3 billion South African rand. Operating profit fell 4.7% to 375 million rand, while headline earnings per share declined 3.2% to 228 cents.
Moneyweb attributed the pressure to weaker consumer spending, higher fuel costs linked to Middle East conflicts and weaker regional performance, particularly in Botswana. The group also recorded a goodwill impairment connected with its planned reduction of its Botswana shareholding, which weighed on basic earnings per share.
Cash generation becomes a priority
Free cash flow more than doubled to 459 million rand during the reporting period. Famous Brands reduced capital expenditure by 73% to 38 million rand and lowered total borrowings to 1 billion rand, helping reduce finance costs on debt.
The company also spent 57 million rand on its share buyback programme, launched in January 2026. Management said its capital allocation approach had become more selective, with priority given to projects offering compelling returns and shorter payback periods.
Uneven performance across the portfolio
The Leading Brands portfolio in South Africa benefited from new restaurant openings and higher system-wide sales, while the Supply Chain business also grew. By contrast, Signature Brands revenue declined and the unit reported an operating loss.
Outside South Africa, Botswana remained a weak spot, while revenue in the United Kingdom also declined. For investors, the results point to a group with resilient cash generation but continuing pressure on margins and selected regional operations.
