- ENGIE Chile began commercial operation of the converted Infraestructura Energética Mejillones unit on October 15, 2026.
- The project supports grid reliability while enabling greater integration of renewable generation.
- The conversion forms part of ENGIE Chile's wider shift away from coal and toward flexible power infrastructure.
ENGIE Chile said on October 15, 2026, that Infraestructura Energética Mejillones had entered commercial operation after being converted from coal to natural gas. The 377 MW unit is designed to strengthen reliability in Chile's National Electric System and support the integration of renewable generation, according to the ENGIE Chile announcement.
Conversion brings flexible capacity
The project required an investment of 78 million US dollars. ENGIE adapted an existing thermal-generation unit with new dual burners, boiler modifications and upgrades to related operating systems.
The National Electricity Coordinator authorized commercial operation on September 29, 2026. The unit had been disconnected from the national grid on December 31, 2025, before the conversion work began.
Coal exit shifts asset strategy
ENGIE described the project as Chile's first conversion of a coal-fired thermal plant to natural gas. The company said the move allows existing infrastructure to provide system support while the power mix incorporates more renewable generation.
The conversion is part of ENGIE Chile's broader transformation of its energy complexes. The company has also been adding battery storage and repurposing infrastructure originally built for thermal generation, pointing to a strategy that combines lower-carbon generation with dispatchable capacity.
ENGIE Chile's operating profile
ENGIE Chile operates electricity-generation infrastructure in Chile, including thermal, renewable and battery-storage assets. Its portfolio serves the National Electric System, with projects spanning the Antofagasta Region and the Santiago metropolitan area. The Mejillones conversion illustrates the company's focus on adapting existing assets as the country's electricity system integrates more variable renewable power.
