China Yangtze stock faces weaker third-quarter earnings after low water inflows cut hydropower generation. Lower financing costs provided support.

Quarterly pressure meets long-term strengths

  • Third-quarter revenue and attributable profit fell sharply as hydropower generation declined.
  • Lower water inflows affected all six major hydropower stations during the quarter.
  • Falling financial expenses continued to support the company's cash-generation profile.

China Yangtze Power reported a weaker third quarter on October 30, 2026, as below-average water inflows reduced generation at its major hydropower stations. A CICC analysis published by Futu said the results fell short of expectations.

Third-quarter operating revenue reached RMB 25.13 billion, down 13.5 percent from a year earlier. Net profit attributable to shareholders fell 23.4 percent to RMB 11.59 billion. For the first nine months, revenue declined 4.1 percent to RMB 63.06 billion, while attributable net profit decreased 6.6 percent to RMB 26.34 billion.

Hydropower output drives earnings

The six hydropower stations recorded a 14.9 percent year-over-year decline in third-quarter generation. Output at the Three Gorges and Gezhouba stations dropped 29.2 percent and 17.0 percent, respectively, while generation at Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba also declined.

The pressure was partly offset by lower financing costs. Financial expenses fell 15.2 percent in the quarter to RMB 1.95 billion and declined 14.1 percent for the first nine months to RMB 6.15 billion. Investment income also weakened, while the company recorded a RMB 590 million loss from changes in fair value, compared with a gain of RMB 155 million a year earlier.

The CICC analysis cut its 2026 and 2027 earnings forecasts by 5.1 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively, citing weaker-than-expected generation and electricity prices in the market-based trading segment. The assessment also pointed to the company's large hydropower assets, cash-flow strength and dividend capacity as longer-term supports.

China Yangtze Power's business

China Yangtze Power, based in China, operates hydropower, pumped storage, international, smart integrated energy, new energy and power distribution businesses. Its core portfolio includes six large cascade hydropower stations and related clean-energy activities.

In China's electric-utilities industry, the company is considerably larger than Huaneng Lancang River Hydropower, Huaneng Power International and Huadian Power International by the market-capitalization figures listed by TradingView. Its profile is more concentrated on large-scale hydropower than the broader thermal and renewable generation mix of several peers.

China Yangtze Power stock remains linked to hydrological conditions, generation volumes and electricity pricing. The next focus for investors is whether water availability and market-based power prices improve after the third-quarter setback.
