Cheil Worldwide reported weaker third-quarter results on October 30, with revenue and profit pressured by major clients optimizing marketing budgets and by the stronger won. The figures were reported by The Asia Business Daily.
Profit pressure reaches third quarter
Consolidated revenue fell 12.6 percent year over year to 1.039 trillion won. Operating profit declined 19.7 percent to 77 billion won, while net income dropped 29.7 percent to 45.6 billion won. Gross profit, a key measure for advertising agencies, decreased 6.4 percent to 428.1 billion won.
Cheil Worldwide said major clients were streamlining marketing budgets. The company added that key overseas bases, including North America and Latin America, continued to grow despite the difficult environment.
New advertisers support business mix
The agency is seeking to reduce reliance on affiliated clients by winning external accounts. Non-affiliated advertisers represented 29 percent of gross profit in the quarter, an increase of 2.2 percentage points from a year earlier. New accounts named by the company included Amazon Ads, Temasek, Carlsberg, Kakao Commerce and Subway.
Digital services accounted for 55 percent of the service mix, followed by retail and below-the-line activities at 29 percent and traditional media advertising at 16 percent. The mix leaves digital as the company's largest reported service area.
Shareholder returns remain in focus
Cheil Worldwide retired all treasury shares, equivalent to 12 percent of previously issued shares. The shares had a book value of 282.8 billion won. The company plans to buy back and retire another 140 billion won by September 2027 and maintain a dividend payout ratio of 60 percent of consolidated net income.
