Bamburi Cement is preparing a USD 250 million clinker plant in Kenya's Kwale County, with President William Ruto expected to attend the groundbreaking ceremony within three weeks, according to Billionaires Africa in a report published Tuesday, October 27.
The Matuga project in Kwale will add a clinker line with annual capacity of 1.6 million tons. Bamburi signed the construction contract with China's Sinoma CBMI in December 2025, and the project is intended to lift the company's clinker capacity from 1 million to 2.6 million tons a year.
Local production becomes strategic
The expansion comes as Kenya encourages producers to manufacture clinker locally. Bamburi's management has said the new line should reduce dependence on imported clinker, while the country's import duties and levies continue to make local production strategically important.
For investors, the project represents a longer-term capacity investment rather than a completed earnings catalyst. Execution, commissioning and demand growth will determine how quickly the additional capacity translates into sales and margins.
Refinery bid adds demand potential
Bamburi is also seeking to supply cement and concrete for Aliko Dangote's planned Lamu refinery. The company has proposed products from its Mombasa plant, but the supply opportunity remains a bid rather than an awarded contract. That distinction leaves the commercial benefit uncertain while the refinery project advances.
Company profile
