Admiral Group stock faces pressure as Peel Hunt cuts target

- Peel Hunt lowered its target price and retained a Sell rating, citing limited evidence of a UK motor insurance recovery.
- Admiral's first-half pretax profit fell as UK motor profit weakened, while reserve releases supported results.
- Higher premiums could pressure policy volumes and ancillary income if competitors do not follow.
Peel Hunt has cut its target price for Admiral Group and kept its Sell rating, warning that the UK motor insurance market still shows little sign of a sustained recovery. Insurance Business published the assessment on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
Broker questions motor recovery
Peel Hunt reduced its target from 2,620 pence to 2,460 pence in a note published on October 14. The broker said Admiral remained expensive at about 20 times underlying 2026 earnings and argued that mixed rate movements continued to trail claims inflation.
Admiral began raising UK motor rates in the second quarter after pricing below claims inflation in 2024 and 2025 to build market share. Peel Hunt estimated that rates were rising by about 8%, only slightly above its 5% to 7% claims inflation expectation.
Policy volumes face pressure
The central risk is that competitors may not follow Admiral's pricing moves. Peel Hunt estimated that a 1% rate increase could reduce policy volumes by roughly 6% in the price-sensitive UK market, where comparison websites make premiums easy to compare.
The broker expects Admiral's UK motor policies to fall to about 5.5 million in 2026 and 4.8 million in 2027. That would also put pressure on ancillary income from add-ons and fees, which Insurance Business said accounts for about 40% of Admiral's UK motor operating profit.
Profit decline sharpens scrutiny
Admiral's first-half pretax profit fell 18% to GBP 429 million, while UK motor profit also declined 18% to GBP 457 million. Peel Hunt said larger-than-expected reserve releases cushioned the result and estimated that about GBP 390 million of reserve buffer could be drawn down as margins recover.
The broker also highlighted Admiral's reliance on its reinsurance panel, which it estimated funds 45% to 50% of capital requirements. It stressed that a pullback by the panel was not its base case. Admiral is also cutting about 500 UK jobs as part of a GBP 100 million cost savings programme.
Admiral's business and position

In UK motor insurance, the company is described as the largest player and sells mainly directly and through price comparison websites, giving its pricing decisions significance for the wider market.
