Hydrogen pilot plant enters next stage
The expansion will add a compression and purification unit and five hydrogen storage tanks to the plant at voestalpine’s Linz site. The project partners said the expansion costs amount to EUR 16.4 million. The facility will research the production, compression, purification, storage, loading and further use of green hydrogen. Four tanks will balance fluctuations in hydrogen production and consumption, while a fifth tank is planned to supply the HY4SMELT demonstration plant from the end of 2027 through an approximately 1-kilometer pipeline. The first functional tests have started, with initial research results expected by the end of 2026. The project is scheduled to run until December 2030, according to the VERBUND release.
