New sensor targets in-cabin monitoring

In a September 14, 2026 release, STMicroelectronics introduced the ST SafeSense VD56GA, a 1.1 MP automotive image sensor for infrared in-cabin sensing. The company said the device is designed to help original equipment manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers expand driver and occupant monitoring across high-volume vehicle platforms while balancing performance, integration and cost.

According to the issuer’s release, the sensor uses ST DeepNIR backside-illuminated pixel architecture and delivers 35 percent higher modulation transfer function sharpness and nearly 60 percent higher quantum efficiency than the previous generation. The VD56GA is housed in a 3.7 mm by 3.2 mm chip-scale package and includes embedded image-processing functions such as mirror, crop, dark calibration, auto exposure and piecewise-linear processing. The same STMicroelectronics release said the device supports RAW and YUV output formats and that samples were available.
