In a release dated October 2, 2026, SoftBank Corp said it had completed a verification trial using a Japan-manufactured Disaster Relief Unit Pod mounted on a large remotely piloted aircraft system. The company said the aircraft established a ground communication area exceeding 5 kilometers in diameter while flying at an altitude of 3,000 meters.
The trial used a GA-ASI SeaGuardian MQ-9B owned by the Japan Coast Guard, with cooperation from Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems. SoftBank reported outdoor communication speeds of up to 20 Mbps for downlink and 5 Mbps for uplink, using a 5 MHz bandwidth. The company said it plans to use the trial's data and insights to advance the technology and study operating methods for emergency coverage during disasters.
