Satellite enters operational phase
According to an OHB SE release, ATHENE-1 was developed and built by OHB LuxSpace together with the Bundeswehr University Munich. The satellite lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 as part of the Transporter-18 mission and was deployed into low Earth orbit as planned.
The company said the mission has now entered its operational phase. ATHENE-1 is intended to serve as a technology demonstration and test platform for 22 scientific experiments covering satellite communications and connectivity, intelligence and sensing, navigation, and artificial-intelligence-enabled data processing in orbit.
Testing communications technologies
OHB said the nearly 300-kilogram satellite will test technologies for detecting, locating and mitigating interference. The mission will also evaluate intelligent signal and data processing and future applications for government and military users. Initial operational phases and in-orbit commissioning were scheduled to precede the gradual activation of the scientific experiments.
