Vodafone and Nokia test fibre technology
Vodafone and Nokia said on September 30, 2026, that they had successfully tested technology designed to extend the life of existing fibre broadband networks beyond 2030. The trial at Vodafone’s Newbury laboratory in the United Kingdom demonstrated that 50G Passive Optical Network architecture can operate alongside the more widely deployed GPON and XGS-PON technologies, according to Vodafone.
Vodafone said 50G PON aims to deliver speeds of up to 50 gigabits per second, approximately five times the capacity of 10 gigabit-capable XGS-PON technology. The companies also demonstrated synchronization for mobile backhaul over 25GS-PON and 50G PON. Vodafone plans further multi-PON tests, including live deployments, across its pan-European fibre footprint during 2026 and 2027.
