Holcim UAE and carbon-storage company 44.01 held an official commissioning ceremony for a live-condition carbon-capture and underground-mineralization pilot at the Holcim Emirates Cement Plant in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.
Carbon capture at the Fujairah plant
The pilot is designed to capture 4 to 4.5 tons of carbon dioxide daily from the plant’s active flue gas. The captured carbon is transported to a nearby underground site, where it is injected into naturally occurring ultramafic rock formations and mineralizes into solid rock over months to years, according to the press release.
Partnership supports permanent storage
Holcim UAE describes the project as the UAE’s first live-condition carbon-capture and underground-mineralization pilot in the cement industry. The company says 44.01’s technology accelerates the natural process in which carbon dioxide reacts with rocks such as peridotite to form stable carbonate minerals.
The carbon-capture system is being delivered with NT Energies using Shell CANSOLV technology, while Gulf Cryo supports transportation of the captured carbon dioxide. The project also has local support from the Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation and the Fujairah Environment Authority.
