In a September 29, 2026 release, GM News reported that Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, plans to produce lithium manganese-rich prismatic battery cells at its Spring Hill, Tennessee, plant for future GM electric vehicles.
GM News said the LMR technology is designed to provide 33 percent greater energy density than lithium iron phosphate chemistry at a comparable cost. Construction and facility upgrades are expected to begin later in 2026 and be completed in 2028, with the expansion projected to create 500 new jobs in addition to the facility’s current workforce of 1,200 employees.
