Ford focuses on skilled-trades workforce gap
Ford hosted its second annual ACCELERATE the Essential Economy summit on September 30, bringing together business and policy leaders, educators, small and midsize business owners, and workers to discuss the skilled-trades labor gap, according to an event update published by Ford.
The Ford article said the summit was intended to develop cross-sector solutions and provide research, best practices and an agenda for strengthening the so-called Essential Economy. Ford described the skilled-trades gap as a major challenge for that part of the economy.
Farley outlines workforce initiatives
In a September 24 article, Ford CEO Jim Farley wrote that at least 2.1 million skilled-trades jobs may go unfilled by 2030. He said training programs produce 55 workers for every 100 skilled-trades workers needed. The Ford-authored article also said the company founded the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades with BlackRock, Google and Carhartt, partnered with Bloomberg Philanthropies on an auto-tech program in Detroit Public Schools, and worked with Lyft to support access to training and apprenticeships.
