Pilot plant advances elastomer recycling

Covestro opened a pilot plant for the chemical recycling of high-performance elastomers at its Leverkusen site on September 16, 2026, according to the company’s press release. The double-digit million-euro project moves a recycling process for Vulkollan high-performance polyurethane elastomers from laboratory development into pilot operation.

Covestro said the process can recycle more than 90 percent of selected end-of-life Vulkollan material by mass and reduce its carbon footprint by up to two-thirds compared with fossil-based virgin material. The pilot plant is intended to test different waste streams, refine the process and generate data for potential industrial scale-up, the company said in the same release.
