BMO joins tokenization project
BMO Financial Group said on September 29, 2026, that it had joined Project Agorá, a public-private collaboration convened by the Bank for International Settlements and the Institute of International Finance. The project includes eight central banks and more than 40 regulated global financial institutions and examines how tokenization and programmability could improve wholesale cross-border payments.
BMO said its participation builds on real-value, multi-jurisdictional testing conducted in July 2026 and complements work with Canadian banks on a Canadian-dollar tokenized deposit solution. The project also covers regulatory and legal issues involving tokenized central bank reserves and commercial bank deposits, including settlement, anti-money-laundering and data-privacy requirements.
Planned Canadian capital mobilization
In a separate September 11 announcement, BMO Financial Group said it intended to mobilize up to CAD 70 billion in new capital over 10 years for critical Canadian sectors, including electricity infrastructure, transportation infrastructure, mining and critical minerals, AI computing, defense and security, and oil and gas.
