Kryvyi Rih operations suspended
In a September 25 release distributed by GlobeNewswire, ArcelorMittal said it had advised the Ukrainian government that it could not restart operations at its Ukrainian subsidiary, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, in a safe and sustainable manner.
The company said the plant had been targeted by four missile strikes over five weeks, with the latest attack occurring on September 21. It reported five fatalities and 17 injured employees, including one person who remained in critical condition.
ArcelorMittal said it had provided more than USD 700 million to ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih to support continuity of operations. It expects to record a non-cash impairment charge of approximately USD 1 billion, principally reflecting impairment of property, plant and equipment at the Ukrainian operation.
The company said it was discussing the future of the plant with the Ukrainian government and would focus on preserving the infrastructure so that options for restarting operations could remain available when peace returns.
