WIG 20 closed at 4,185.52 points on October 9, 2026, up 1.37 percent, as energy and mining stocks led a broad Warsaw rebound. The closing level and move were published in the GPW closing data, while the Warsaw Stock Exchange showed PGE and KGHM among the session leaders.
Energy and mining lead the rebound
PGE rose 6.23 percent, the strongest gain among the index leaders cited in the session summary. KGHM advanced 5.68 percent. The move in KGHM followed news that the European Commission granted strategic-project status to two of its initiatives, the Retkow-Grodziszcze deposit and the Legnica copper-smelter recycling project, according to Bankier.
Banks lagged the broader index
Thirteen WIG 20 stocks gained during the session, but the banking sector underperformed. The WIG Banks index fell 0.51 percent, while PKO BP declined 0.85 percent, Bank Pekao lost 0.72 percent and Erste fell 0.32 percent. The contrast between energy gains and bank weakness was also highlighted by Portal Samorzadowy.
What comes next
For the next Warsaw session on October 12, 2026, GPW lists a change of the abbreviated trading name for WISE ENERGY to WISEENERG. The exchange said the new designation will apply from that date in its market notices.
