- Bank shares were among the main contributors, with Alior Bank and Bank Pekao posting notable gains.
- The advance remained selective as mWIG40 rose while sWIG80 and NewConnect indexes declined.
The WIG 20 closed at 4,283.82 points on Thursday, October 29, 2026, gaining 0.86% against the previous session. The closing level and daily change were reported by PAP.
Bank shares drive large-cap gains
Bank stocks were a key source of strength during the Warsaw session. Inwestycje.pl identified Alior Bank and Bank Pekao among the session's stronger large-cap names. Alior Bank rose 3.27%, while Bank Pekao gained 1.58%, according to the publication.
The move followed a stronger performance by the benchmark on Wednesday, when the WIG 20 had risen 0.21%. Thursday's advance kept the index above 4,200 points and brought it closer to the 4,300-point level, an area that may remain a short-term reference for investors.
Market breadth remains selective
The broader market did not move uniformly. The WIG rose 0.72% to 161,499.83 points, while the mWIG40 gained 0.52% to 10,945.45 points. By contrast, the sWIG80 fell 0.88% to 30,084.87 points. The pattern suggests that demand remained concentrated more heavily in liquid large-cap shares than across the full equity market.
Trading activity on the main market reached PLN 3.28 billion, according to the Warsaw Stock Exchange's market statistics. The session therefore combined a solid advance in the benchmark with a narrower improvement in market breadth.
What investors should watch next
For the WIG 20, the next test is whether the index can sustain its move toward 4,300 points and whether participation broadens beyond banks and other highly liquid constituents. The weaker performance of small-cap and NewConnect indexes remains a reminder that the improvement in Polish equities is selective rather than market-wide.
