The VIX fell sharply during Wednesday's US trading session. At 18:56 Berlin time, or 12:56 p.m. Eastern time, the index stood at 16.74, down 4.09 points, or 19.64 percent, from the previous close of 20.83. The figure is an intraday reading and should not be treated as the final level for November 4.
Volatility retreats after the vote
The Cboe Volatility Index measures the market's expectations for near-term volatility based on S&P 500 options. Its decline on Wednesday marked a substantial reversal from the elevated levels seen around the US midterm elections.
In a morning market commentary, StoneX reported that the VIX was trading near 18 and down about 13 percent earlier in the day. The firm linked the broader risk-on tone to the election outcome and said markets were beginning to refocus on economic fundamentals, policy implementation and corporate earnings.
Intraday move remains significant
The move from 20.83 to 16.74 represents a larger decline than the previous session's modest easing. It indicates that options markets were pricing less near-term uncertainty after the political event had passed, although the VIX remains sensitive to changes in expected S&P 500 volatility and can move considerably during the session.
Investors should distinguish the spot index from VIX futures and from one-day volatility measures. Those instruments can reflect different time horizons and may not move in parallel with the 30-day VIX. The 16.74 level therefore describes the market's intraday assessment at the stated time, not a forecast or a trading recommendation.
