Chip losses lift VIX to 15.49 points
The PHLX semiconductor index fell 1.2 percent for a fifth consecutive session. Reuters linked the pressure to concerns about Chinese memory-chip advances and comments from Broadcom Chief Executive Hock Tan.
Bank results produced a mixed backdrop. Citigroup fell 4.1 percent despite beating profit estimates, while Goldman Sachs gained 0.2 percent. Wells Fargo lost 2.2 percent after net interest income missed expectations. Johnson and Johnson dropped 6.0 percent despite topping profit estimates, Reuters said.
VIX stays focused on inflation risk
The S&P 500 finished nearly flat, while more than 200 components remained lower for the year. The breadth picture and continuing technology weakness kept implied volatility above Monday's close.
