TSMC supports the index as MediaTek drops
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. rose 0.39 percent to NT$2,585.00 after reaching an intraday record. Its advance helped the broader index set a new closing high. ASE Technology Holding gained 0.27 percent, while MediaTek fell 4.74 percent to NT$4,920.00, Focus Taiwan reported.
The market's approach to 50,000 points prompted selling to lock in gains, according to analyst Kerry Huang of Concord Securities. The session followed Monday's technology-led rally, which was supported by weaker-than-expected US payroll data and lower expectations for an immediate Federal Reserve rate hike. Taipei Times said investors were turning their attention to September sales and third-quarter earnings.
What is ahead
TSMC's investor conference on October 15 is the next major scheduled catalyst for the semiconductor-heavy index. The company is expected to provide an update on its business and the broader semiconductor outlook, according to Barchart.
