Taiwan Weighted (TAIEX) closes 0.03 percent lower below 50,000

The index slipped to 49,806.37 points as investors paused below 50,000; financials outperformed tech stocks before Friday's holiday.

The Taiwan Weighted (TAIEX) closed on October 7, 2026 at 49,806.37 points, down 16.18 points or 0.03 percent, as Focus Taiwan reported. The index traded between 49,567.52 and 49,966.89 points. Turnover was TWD 925.99 billion.

Technology pause, financial sector rotation

Large-cap technology stocks weakened as investors hesitated below the 50,000-point threshold and reduced positions ahead of the National Day holiday, according to Focus Taiwan. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. closed unchanged at TWD 2,585.00. MediaTek fell 1.73 percent, ASE Technology Holding dropped 1.61 percent, Hon Hai Precision Industry lost 1.56 percent and Delta Electronics declined 2.93 percent.

Buying rotated toward financial and selected old-economy shares. The financial sector rose 1.02 percent. Hua Nan Financial Holdings gained 3.19 percent, while KGI Financial Holding advanced 2.26 percent. Formosa Plastics jumped 10 percent and Nan Ya Plastics gained 7.17 percent. Foreign institutional investors sold a net TWD 13.04 billion on the main board.

Events ahead

Taiwan's economic calendar lists September exports and imports data for October 8 at 8:00 a.m. Taipei time, according to Trading Economics. Market attention is also turning to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s investor conference on October 15, which is expected to provide an update on its business outlook and overseas expansion, as Taipei Times reported.
