The Taiwan Weighted ended Thursday's session sharply lower, falling 1,374.19 points, or 3.20%, to 41,574.72. The close was below 42,000 and marked the index's lowest level since July 31. The closing data and market commentary were reported by Focus Taiwan, citing CNA.

Technology stocks drive the decline

According to the report, investor sentiment weakened after the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index posted steep losses overnight. Market participants were concerned that artificial intelligence data-center deployment in the United States could be delayed, prompting broad selling in technology heavyweights, cooling-solution companies and printed circuit board makers.

TSMC fell 0.88% to NT$2,240 after initially helping to cushion the market. MediaTek dropped 6.86% to NT$3,460, Delta Electronics lost 7.38% to NT$1,130 and Hon Hai Precision Industry declined 2.08% to NT$235. Several cooling-solution and PCB companies reached Taiwan's 10% daily price limit, underscoring the concentration of the selling in AI-related supply chains.

Sharp move after volatile trading

The index fell as much as 1,435.34 points during the session and reached an intraday low of 41,513.57 before recovering modestly into the close. Turnover totaled NT$926.02 billion. The decline was the 13th-largest single-day closing-point loss in Taiwan's market history, according to Focus Taiwan.

The previous session had ended at 42,948.91, as also reported by Taipei Times. That makes Thursday's 1,374.19-point decline consistent with the reported 3.20% move. Foreign institutional investors sold a net NT$102.46 billion on the main board, the 10th-largest one-day foreign net sell-off on record, according to the CNA report.

Outlook remains tied to AI spending

The immediate market focus is likely to remain on the pace of AI data-center deployment and the performance of semiconductor shares. A Taishin Securities Investment Advisory strategist cited by Focus Taiwan said demand for related components remained intact despite possible delays, while noting that sector rotation could keep the index volatile. The report also identified uncertainty following the US midterm elections as an additional source of market volatility.
