The Taiwan Weighted Index, also known as the TAIEX, closed at 43,307.54 on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The benchmark lost 1,612.60 points, or 3.59%, from the previous close of 44,920.14, according to Focus Taiwan. The index traded between 43,191.58 and 44,614.64 during the session.
Technology Shares Lead Broad Retreat
Focus Taiwan, citing dealers, said the decline was triggered by another overnight sell-off in US technology stocks and continuing concerns about the scale and potential returns of artificial-intelligence investment. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.37%, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 1.07% in the preceding US session.
Heavyweights amplified the move. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. fell 1.50% to 2,295 New Taiwan dollars and accounted for about 280 points of the TAIEX decline, according to Focus Taiwan. MediaTek dropped 7.43% to 3,675 New Taiwan dollars, ASE Technology Holding lost 8.61%, and Delta Electronics fell 6.27%. Weakness in South Korean memory-chip suppliers also pressured Taiwan's semiconductor shares.
Losses Spread Across the Market
Trading was broad and heavy. Focus Taiwan reported turnover of 928.06 billion New Taiwan dollars, compared with 799.69 billion New Taiwan dollars on Monday, while the financial sector fell 2.54%. Foreign institutional investors sold a net 107.31 billion New Taiwan dollars on the main board.
Taiwan News reported that 42 of the 43 companies trading above 1,000 New Taiwan dollars closed lower and that 14 stocks reached their daily limit-down. Airlines and selected defensive names were among the few areas to advance, while PharmaEssentia was the only stock cited by the publication as gaining among the high-priced shares.
Investor Focus Turns to Earnings
The session marked the TAIEX's seventh-largest point decline, according to Focus Taiwan. The breadth of the retreat indicates that the pressure extended beyond a small group of semiconductor leaders, although technology and AI-related companies remained the principal source of weakness. Taiwan News quoted E Sun Taiwan Core Technology Active ETF manager Kuo Ming-yu as saying that uncertainty over US midterm elections and monetary policy was contributing to volatility. She also said attention could shift toward third-quarter earnings and next year's growth prospects later in November.
