The Taiwan Weighted Index ended Wednesday's session at 42,948.91, down 358.63 points or 0.83 percent from the previous close of 43,307.54. The decline extended the index's losing streak to five sessions, but the final result was considerably less severe than the move seen during the day.

According to Focus Taiwan, the index traded between 41,855.82 and 43,741.54. That produced an intraday range of 1,885.72 points, or about 4.5 percent relative to the closing level. Trading value rose to NTD 1.11 trillion from about NTD 1 trillion on Tuesday.

Sharp Reversal During the Session

The market opened higher but later fell below 42,000 points. Focus Taiwan attributed the recovery to bargain hunting and investor assessment of the US midterm elections. The report said investors responded to indications that President Donald Trump would accept the election result and work with Democrats, although uncertainty remained about the policy direction that could follow.

Selected semiconductor stocks helped the index recover from its low. MediaTek rose 1.09 percent and ASE Technology gained 1.79 percent, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company fell 1.53 percent after recovering from its session low. TSMC's weight in the market meant its rebound contributed materially to the broader index's recovery, according to the report.

Technology Weakness Remains Visible

The session was not a broad-based rebound. Hon Hai Precision Industry fell 2.24 percent and Quanta Computer declined 2.89 percent. The financial sector dropped 0.71 percent, with Cathay Financial Holding lower by 1.77 percent, while selected petrochemical and shipping shares outperformed.

Foreign institutional investors sold a net NTD 149.899 billion worth of shares on the main board, adding to the market's underlying pressure. The combination of heavy foreign selling, technology-sector volatility and election-related uncertainty leaves the next session sensitive to further developments in US markets and policy expectations.
