The Taiwan Weighted ended Wednesday's session lower after a volatile day in Taipei. The benchmark closed at 42,948.91, down 358.63 points, or 0.83 percent, according to Focus Taiwan. The index moved between 41,855.82 and 43,741.54, while turnover rose to NT$1.11 trillion.
Bargain Hunting Limits the Decline
Shares recovered after the Taiex dipped below 42,000 points, with investors buying selected artificial-intelligence-related semiconductor stocks. Focus Taiwan cited Alex Huang of Mega International Investment Services, who said the market was also reacting to better-than-expected overnight results from U.S. chip designer AMD and AI-server maker Supermicro.
The recovery was uneven across the technology sector. MediaTek gained 1.09 percent to NT$3,715.00, while ASE Technology Holding rose 1.79 percent to NT$627.00. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. fell 1.53 percent to NT$2,260.00 but rebounded from an intraday low of NT$2,235.00. Its recovery helped the broader index regain about 200 points, according to the same report.
Election Uncertainty Remains a Market Factor
Investors also followed the U.S. midterm elections, with Democrats projected to gain control of Congress. The election outcome added to uncertainty around the policy environment for artificial intelligence and the technology investment cycle. Huang said volatility could continue because of uncertainty over the future direction of U.S. policy.
Other technology-heavy names remained under pressure. Hon Hai Precision Industry declined 2.24 percent to NT$240.00 and Quanta Computer fell 2.89 percent to NT$302.50. Selected traditional industries provided some support: the petrochemical index rose 1.19 percent, while financial stocks fell 0.71 percent.
Foreign institutional investors sold a net NT$149.899 billion on Taiwan's main board, according to the Taiwan Stock Exchange data cited by Focus Taiwan. The combination of heavy foreign selling, technology-sector volatility and election-related uncertainty leaves the next session sensitive to developments in global AI shares and U.S. policy expectations.
