- The Shanghai Composite closed Friday at 3,649.18 points, down 1.10 percent.
- Technology and AI-linked shares came under pressure amid concerns about valuations and future returns on AI spending.
- The index still gained 1.39 percent over the week, ending a six-week losing streak.
The Shanghai Composite ended Friday's session at 3,649.18 points, down 1.10 percent from Thursday's close of 3,689.91. The decline followed two consecutive winning sessions and represented a 40.73-point retreat, according to Xinhua.
Technology Shares Lead Declines
The move lower was concentrated in growth and technology-related areas. Xinhua reported that electronic-components and co-packaged-optics stocks were among the leading decliners, while genetically modified organisms, planting and forestry, and banking shares were among the stronger groups.
A broader global technology selloff shaped the session's backdrop. DPA, published by Yahoo Finance, said investors were questioning whether substantial AI spending would generate sufficient returns and whether valuations had become too demanding. The report linked those concerns to selling in companies exposed to AI data centers, chipmakers and semiconductor manufacturers.
Weekly Gain Survives Friday Pullback
Friday's loss did not erase the week's recovery. Morningstar, citing Dow Jones Market Data and FactSet, calculated a 1.39 percent weekly advance, or 50.16 points. That was enough to break a six-week losing streak, although Friday's decline was the index's largest one-day fall since October 30.
The broader market weakness was also visible in related mainland benchmarks. The Shenzhen Component Index fell 2.57 percent to 11,175.78, while the ChiNext Index dropped 3.96 percent to 2,465.23, according to Xinhua. Combined turnover for stocks covered by the Shanghai Composite and Shenzhen Component was about 1.66 trillion yuan, below 2.12 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
For investors, the session underscores the market's sensitivity to global technology sentiment even after a positive weekly rebound. The Shanghai Composite remains a broad measure of Shanghai-listed A and B shares; the Shanghai Composite topic page provides additional index coverage.
