- The Shanghai Composite finished Thursday at 3,689.91 points, up 0.10 percent from Wednesday's close.
- Photovoltaic, precious-metals and computing-power leasing shares led gains, while coal, banking and brokerage stocks weakened.
- State support measures and improved risk appetite after the US midterm election helped sustain the rebound, although the market advance remained narrow.
The Shanghai Composite ended Thursday's session at 3,689.91 points, up 0.10 percent from Wednesday's close of 3,686.17. The modest advance extended a rebound that had lifted the index 2.16 percent in the previous session, but the latest gains were uneven across sectors.
Growth shares lead a mixed session
According to Xinhua, photovoltaic, precious-metals and computing-power leasing stocks led the market. Coal, banking and brokerage shares were among the notable decliners. Trading turnover across the Shanghai Composite and Shenzhen Component rose to about 2.12 trillion yuan from 2.04 trillion yuan on the previous trading day, indicating continued activity despite the small index move.
The broader growth complex performed better than the Shanghai benchmark. The STAR Composite Index gained 1.38 percent to 1,546.42, while the Shenzhen Component rose 1.19 percent. The contrast suggests that demand was concentrated in technology and newer-economy themes rather than in the large, dividend-oriented sectors that carry significant weight in the Shanghai index.
Policy support remains a market anchor
Beijing's recently announced measures continued to underpin sentiment. They include targeted liquidity operations, a lower interest rate for lending linked to share buybacks and steps intended to encourage stock purchases. Trading Economics reported that investors nevertheless remained cautious, with a durable recovery seen as dependent on stronger economic growth, better corporate earnings and revived confidence.
External signals also influenced the day's sector rotation. A Reuters report said Chinese cleantech shares benefited from expectations that a Democratic-controlled US Congress could provide greater support for clean energy. The report also cautioned that the move was driven more by sentiment than by concrete policy proposals.
Rebound continues, conviction remains limited
The Shanghai Composite's 0.10 percent rise, following Wednesday's sharp advance, points to a consolidation of the rebound rather than a broad-based breakout. The South China Morning Post linked the wider recovery to stronger state support and reduced risk aversion after the US congressional election. For investors, the next test is whether policy assistance can translate into improving domestic demand and company profits.
