The S&P/TSX Composite heads into Tuesday after closing Monday, October 5, 2026, at 35,518.55 points, up 0.04 percent. Investing.com reported that S&P/TSX 60 futures were up 10 points, or 0.5 percent, at 5:58 a.m. ET on Tuesday.

Technology gains offset energy weakness

Technology shares climbed 1.4 percent on Monday, helped by Shopify, while energy stocks fell 0.4 percent as crude prices declined, according to Investing.com. The same session saw 525 Toronto-listed stocks decline against 457 advancers, with 62 unchanged. The S&P/TSX 60 VIX rose 2.29 percent to 13.42.

Baystreet.ca said easing oil prices and lower global bond yields supported risk appetite, although weaker metal prices limited the advance. December futures were up 0.4 percent in its Tuesday morning market update.

Trade data and Ivey PMI ahead

Statistics Canada's August merchandise-trade figures were scheduled for release at 8:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, followed by the September Ivey Purchasing Managers Index at 10:00 a.m. ET, according to the Dow Jones economic calendar. The calendar listed Canada's July trade surplus at C$0.769 billion and the prior seasonally adjusted Ivey PMI at 64.3.

Canada's trade figures were due before the Toronto market opened at 9:30 a.m. ET. Futures direction, oil prices and the scheduled trade and business-activity data set the next immediate checkpoints for the index.
