- The Russell 2000 closed at 2,811.84 points on October 30, down 47.37 points, or 1.7 percent.
- Technology selling intensified as investors questioned the scale and returns of artificial-intelligence spending.
- Intel's weak profit forecast and concerns following Amazon's results added to the risk-off mood.
- The index still gained 1.3 percent for the week and 13.3 percent for the year, according to the Associated Press.
The Russell 2000 ended Friday, October 30, at 2,811.84 points, down 47.37 points, or 1.7 percent. The decline came as investors reassessed elevated technology valuations and the scale of corporate spending on artificial intelligence. The move marked a weaker close for US equities on the final trading day of October.
The Associated Press report published by Yahoo Finance said the technology-led sell-off intensified on concerns that the artificial-intelligence trade had pushed prices too high. Intel fell almost 29 percent after issuing a profit forecast below analysts' expectations, while Amazon's latest results added to questions about the amount companies are investing in AI. Treasury yields declined as investors sought safer assets, although oil prices rose.
Small Caps Lose Their Cushion
The Russell 2000 had advanced on the previous session, but Friday's decline erased part of that cushion. Despite the setback, the index remained up 35.95 points, or 1.3 percent, for the week. It was also 329.94 points, or 13.3 percent, higher for the year, according to the Associated Press figures.
The contrasting performance underlined the different market exposures of small and large companies. Technology-heavy benchmarks were more directly affected by concerns over AI investment and earnings expectations, while the Russell 2000's domestic and cyclical composition had provided relative support earlier in the week. One session does not establish a lasting change in market leadership, but the divergence remains relevant for investors monitoring breadth and financing-sensitive companies.
Reconstitution Snapshot Adds Context
Friday was also the rank day for the December Russell US Indexes reconstitution. In its October 26 explanation, LSEG said eligible US securities would be ranked by total market capitalization on October 30. The resulting review will reset the breakpoints between the Russell 1000 and Russell 2000, with the newly reconstituted indexes scheduled to take effect after the US market close on December 11.
