- The OMXS30 closed at 3,301.09 on November 5, down 0.32% from the previous close.
- The index reversed an early advance as technology weakness on Wall Street pressured Swedish equities.
- ABB, Ericsson and Saab were among the weakest large-cap constituents, while Nibe, Essity and Volvo gained.
The OMXS30 ended Thursday's session at 3,301.09, down 0.32% from the previous close of 3,311.67. The close followed a volatile session in Stockholm: Nasdaq's official OMXS30 overview recorded an intraday high of 3,346.58 and a low of 3,322.02, while Placera reported the closing level and the day's reversal.
Early gains fade after US open
According to Placera, Swedish shares initially rose as investors assessed the result of the US midterm election. The market then turned lower when Wall Street opened with sharp declines, particularly among technology stocks. The report also noted that Swedish October inflation was lower than expected and that the Bank of England raised interest rates as expected. These developments formed the broader backdrop to a session in which the OMXS30 moved from an early advance to a negative close.
The shift in sentiment was also reflected in broader European trading. A separate Investing.com report said telecoms, oil and gas, and basic materials were among the weaker sectors. About 36.0 billion Swedish kronor in shares changed hands on the Stockholm exchange, according to Placera.
ABB and Ericsson weigh on index
ABB was one of the clearest drags among OMXS30 constituents, falling 4.3% after China indicated that it would not approve SoftBank's acquisition of ABB's robotics division. Placera reported that China accounts for about 30% of the robotics business. Ericsson declined 4.2% after reports that Elon Musk's SpaceX had agreed with Qualcomm to provide technology for a nationwide US 5G network. Saab also fell 4.2%, while Skanska lost 1.4% after reporting an operating profit below the FactSet consensus.
At the other end of the index, Nibe B rose 2.1%, Essity B gained 1.9% and Volvo advanced 1.7%, according to Investing.com. The site also identified ABB, Ericsson and Saab as the weakest performers. The contrasting performance underlined the defensive and company-specific elements of the session, even as the late technology-led sell-off dominated the index direction.
