The Nikkei 225 closed at 69,031 points in Tokyo on October 9, 2026, down 11 points or 0.0 percent, as technology shares remained under pressure from concerns about artificial-intelligence spending. Xinhua reported that the index recovered most of an early decline of nearly 900 points before ending lower.
SoftBank Group fell 3.92 percent and Fast Retailing dropped 4.04 percent as investors reduced exposure to AI-linked and high-priced shares. TradingKey linked the pressure on SoftBank to renewed doubts about AI revenue growth and the financing needs of the sector.
Broad gains offset pressure in high-priced shares
The broader market was firmer even as the price-weighted Nikkei 225 declined. The divergence showed that selling was concentrated in influential technology and consumer names. SG Group reported that 25 of 33 sectors gained.
