The MOEX Russia Index was trading at 2,440.02 points at 14:30 Moscow time on November 3, down 0.635% from the previous main-session close. The intraday move followed a volatile start: according to Finmarket, the index had reached a high of 2,482.96 points and a low of 2,434.69 points. The Moscow Exchange's official index page identifies IMOEX as a capitalization-weighted index of major and liquid Russian stocks.
Volatility remains elevated
The decline contrasted with an early rebound after Monday's sharp sell-off. The MOEX Russia Index had closed the November 2 main session at 2,455.62 points, down 2.28%, according to TASS. The agency attributed the previous session's weakness to falling oil prices and profit-taking, while a weaker ruble provided some support for exporters. At the November 3 intraday reading, 63% of shares in the Moscow Exchange main trading sector were lower and trading volume was about 20% above its one-month average, Finmarket reported.
Oil and diplomacy in focus
Market participants were assessing both commodity prices and the geopolitical backdrop. Bank Saint Petersburg analyst Victor Grigoriev, quoted by AKM, said the previous day's correction had been encouraged by a sharp fall in oil prices, renewed infrastructure attacks and a lack of breakthrough news in negotiations. He reported Brent futures at USD 107.1 per barrel on November 3 and noted that investors were awaiting further developments on the negotiating track.
The planned trilateral Russia-Ukraine-US talks in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11 were another focus. Finam reported that the agenda is expected to include security guarantees and that Vladimir Medinsky will lead the Russian delegation. The report described the market's base case as neutral to negative with elevated volatility. It also highlighted weakness in VK shares after their earlier surge and pressure on Sovcomflot shares following news about a possible sale of a state-held stake.
What investors are watching next
The immediate technical range remained broad, with 2,400-2,450 points serving as a downside area to watch and 2,500 points as a key recovery threshold cited by market analysts. These levels are market observations rather than forecasts. With the Moscow session still open at the cited time, the 2,440.02-point reading should be treated as an intraday level, not a closing value. Further direction depends on oil prices, currency movements and concrete signals from the upcoming diplomatic meetings.
