- The MOEX Russia Index finished the November 4 additional holiday session at 2,442.10 points, essentially unchanged from the previous session.
- Trading activity was subdued, with investors monitoring oil, gold and the US midterm elections.
- Gold-related shares led gainers, while major oil producers lagged as crude prices weakened.
The MOEX Russia Index finished Wednesday, November 4, at 2,442.10 points in an additional holiday trading session on the Moscow Exchange. The index was essentially unchanged from the 2,441.99-point close recorded on Tuesday, November 3. Finam reported the Wednesday result as a 0.00 percent daily change.
Low-Liquidity Holiday Trading
The session took place on Russia's Unity Day holiday in the format of an additional weekend session. Finam reported turnover of 14.65 billion Russian rubles and described the market as finishing close to unchanged. The reduced participation meant that individual share moves had a relatively strong influence on the day's market tone, while the broad index remained stable.
Investors monitored developments in oil and gold markets as well as the US midterm elections, according to Finam. The combination of a holiday calendar and a limited flow of new company-specific information kept the session focused on external markets and sector rotation rather than a strong directional move in the index.
Gold Miners Outperform Oil Producers
Gold-related stocks were among the strongest performers. Finam cited gains of 2.94 percent for Polyus and 2.88 percent for UGC, while VK, X5 and Inter RAO also advanced. In contrast, oil and gas shares were among the laggards: Rosneft fell 1.20 percent, Gazprom lost 1.00 percent and Lukoil declined 0.59 percent. Ozon also weakened by 0.95 percent.
The sector pattern was consistent with the day's commodity backdrop. Finam said oil prices fell below USD 100 on expectations of de-escalation in the Middle East, while gold-related names received support from the precious-metal market. These moves affected individual constituents but did not produce a material change in the capitalization-weighted benchmark.
Next Market Focus
Near-term attention is likely to remain on crude prices, signals from the Bank of Russia about possible further rate reductions and diplomatic developments ahead of planned Russia-US-Ukraine discussions in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11. Finam analyst Vladimir Chernov said a renewed decline in oil could put the 2,400-point level back in focus, while firmer crude or positive diplomatic signals could provide support.
