The IDX Composite finished Monday's session in Jakarta at 5,096.83, gaining 39.78 points, or 0.79%, from the previous close of 5,057.05. The rise followed early weakness and marked a recovery on the first trading day of November.
CNN Indonesia reported that the index traded at 5,096.83 at the close, with total transactions of IDR 12.39 trillion. Of the stocks recorded at the close, 315 advanced, 285 declined and 118 were unchanged.
Recovery after a weaker opening
The index opened at 5,039.54, down 0.35%, before recovering during the session. According to The Jakarta Post, the benchmark rebounded by 0.95% during the second trading session. The report said the move came against a mixed regional backdrop and after the IDX started applying its revised index calculation.
HSC exclusion changes the benchmark
The Indonesia Stock Exchange began excluding stocks classified as having high shareholding concentration, or HSC, from the IDX Composite calculation on November 2. The Jakarta Post reported that 80 stocks were included in the HSC category and represented about 18% of the index's weighting. Those stocks remain tradable, but their prices no longer contribute to the benchmark calculation under the revised approach.
The IDX describes the IDX Composite as an index measuring the performance of all companies listed on its Main Board and Development Board. The exchange lists the index as using a capped free-float-adjusted market-capitalization weighting method. The methodology change therefore matters for comparisons with earlier index levels, because the composition and weights used in the benchmark have changed even though the underlying shares remain listed.
Sector leadership and market breadth
Six of the 11 sectoral indices advanced, according to CNN Indonesia. Basic materials led with a 2.32% gain, while healthcare was the weakest sector, declining 0.77%. The positive breadth and the recovery from the opening loss point to a firmer session overall, although the benchmark remained close to the psychologically important 5,000-point area.
For ongoing coverage of the IDX Composite, investors should distinguish daily market performance from the separate effects of the HSC methodology change.
